Elemis Hydra-Boost Serum Review

Skin can be thirsty whether it’s too oily or lacking in oil. Dryness and dehydration are separate problems and need to be tackled differently. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, hydration is the most important factor to have healthy looking and feeling skin, no matter your skin type.  At this time of year when the temperatures rise, there is an increased water loss from the skin, so it’s even more important to make sure you’re locking in the moisture with products that can make a real difference.

I’ve been a fan of Elemis for quite some time now, so when I found out that they’d created a clinically proven moisture boosting serum I knew that I had to try this one.  The Elemis Hydra-Boost Serum has a unique formula and contains ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, Dhatelo Oil, Quinic Acid to quench the skin with moisture, plus antioxidant benefits from organic Myrtle extracts, which for a 30ml size serum that retails at AED 385 to me is incredible value, considering the quality of ingredients in this formulation. That is the reason why it is termed as ” A glass of water for your skin” by the Elemis Team.

Personally, any product that contains Hyaluronic Acid, which can hold up to 1,000 times its own weight in water, is one that I am most definitely going to try.

Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is one of those ingredients that is bandied about the beauty industry like it’s going out of fashion. It’s not. In fact, it’s just had an upgrade and you’re going to be seeing a lot more of it. For those who are not entirely au fait with the skin-quenching wonder ingredient, it isn’t a traditional ‘acid’ and won’t leave you tingling or red.

In fact, hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that can retain between 500 and 1,000 times its own weight in water and your body naturally produces it. However, like most things, this slows down as we age. Hyaluronic acid keeps your skin hydrated, plump and firm, which is why it’s used in serums and face creams. Unfortunately, the molecules used by some brands are too big to get through the skin’s layers and stay on the surface, offering only a temporary fix. Some serums, such as The Ordinary’s, contain different-sized molecules, which can provide a higher level of hydration.

Like most skincare ingredients, when it comes to buying a hyaluronic-based product you shouldn’t rely on the most expensive being the best. ‘Always check the label and make sure hyaluronic acid is one of the first few ingredients,’ says cosmetic scientist and founder of Podcast Beauty Brains, Randy Schueller. Otherwise, the dose could be too weak to do anything. Hyaluronic acid can appear on labels as sodium acetyl hyaluronate and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid

The bonus about this ingredient, though, is that it works for all skin types – and fast. Even with the biggest molecule, you will still feel a difference, even if it only lasts a few hours. It’s instant gratification guaranteed.

Product Details

Clinically proven* this instantly hydrating serum provides all day moisturization for thirsty skin. Quinic acid, nourishing Dhatelo oil and Hyaluronic Acid are blended with organic Myrtle, rich in antioxidant phenolic compounds, to help maintain the skin’s natural defense systems.

Trans-epidermal water loss is reduced and the skin’s moisture barrier is reinforced. Moisture is locked into the skin and dehydration is alleviated. Néré Seed bio saccharides help support hydration through the skin’s natural hydrators, Hyaluronic Acid and Aquaporin 3. Water transportation channels are formed and mini-reservoirs are created, helping to deliver optimal skin hydration. The complexion is left feeling soft, supple and perfectly hydrated.

87% agreed that skin felt instantly hydrated

Hydrates, Softens, Nourishes

Like a glass of water for the skin.
Locks in hydration to leave skin feeling fresh and healthy.
Perfect for those who need another level of hydration to keep skin feeling soft, supple and nourished.

This is a very unisex looking product as the packaging is classically elegant with the frosted glass bottle and shiny white metal lid, which would look at home in any gents bathroom.  The only warning I want to give you apart from this product being very addictive to use is when pumping it out I would do so into the palm of your hand rather on the back of your hand as the pump action seems to be quite powerful.

It is advised to apply to cleansed skin under your moisturizer. Use daily, morning and evening. I have a combination skin type and found that this serum felt rich enough to use on its own, to give my skin long-lasting hydration all day long, however it works beautifully in harmony with any of the Elemis day or night cream ranges for that extra layer of moisture, which is my preference at night under the Pro-Collagen Oxygenating Night Cream. I use two pumps for my face and neck.

The texture of this serum is incredibly light weight, which allows the skin to drink all of these potent ingredients deep into the epidermis. It is white in color like a lotion but thinner in consistency than a lotion. Due to its ultra light weight texture, you can even apply it on your sensitive eye area.

This is a phenomenal product that delivers high intense hydration instantly. It locks in the moisture and hydration into your skin, giving it an instant glow. Your skin replenishes and plumps up within a week of use. The best part is that the hydration is not temporary, it actually maintains the hydration level of your skin.

My Verdict

There are so many situations where the Elemis Hydra-boost Serum would be a life-saver! It’s great for those who live in cold harsh climates or simply for those of us who get dry spells during a change in weather. It’s also ideal for us who live in hot, humid climates because it is an excellent way to impart moisture without making skin sticky, greasy, or oily; in other words, it lets your skin breathe! And the fact that it’s helping repair my skin and deal with the root of the problem instead of covering it up makes me feel good.

This is by far, in my opinion, my favorite go-to deep moisturizing product EVER. It has saved my skin, literally, especially in this hot and humid weather!

Elemis Hydra-Boost Serum costs AED 385 and is available at House of Fraser Yas Mall, Abu Dhabi.
